Cask strength: beyond the number

From cask to bottle

Cask strength generally describes whisky bottled without reducing its post-maturation strength with water. The interesting question is how the spirit reaches the bottle, not simply how high its ABV is. Check the individual label; a higher number is not a quality ranking.

Make comparisons useful

Record the sample reference, review date, stated ABV and any dilution. Keep initial impressions separate from later observations. These are editorial record-keeping suggestions, not a review of a particular whisky.

Ask separate questions

Cask strength does not, by itself, establish that the whisky came from one cask. Strength, batch and provenance need their own answers. Use our cask-sourcing notebook to prepare.
